Nestled on the banks of the Beaulieu River in a picturesque setting lies the former shipbuilding village of Bucklers Hard. Originally called Montagu Town, it was founded by the 2nd Duke of Montagu on his New Forest estate and was intended to operate as a free port for trade with the West Indies but the venture proved unsuccessful. However, its location on the edge of the river together with plentiful, timber from the New Forest made it an ideal location for shipbuilding. This industry commenced in the early 18th century when production commenced with ships for the Royal Navy. By the end of that century, it had gained in importance and had become a prominent location for build and supply of naval ships after the arrival of master shipwright, Henry Adams. Following his arrival, he supervised the building of a further 43 ships for the Royal navy, including 3 which saw service at the Battle of Trafalgar.
The little village with its two parallel rows of red-bricked shipwrights’ cottages remains unspoilt and nowadays is a major tourist attraction where you can learn more about its history in its excellent museum, sample the food and drink offering at the Master Builder Hotel, visit some of the cottages or take a leisurely cruise along the Beaulieu River. The river also boasts a prime yachting marina with easy access to the Solent and Isle of Wight beyond.
Buckler’s Hard is the perfect destination for a relaxed and enriching day out and suitable for all the family
